On a crisp spring morning, small boats helmed by passionate fourth- and fifth-generation fishermen leave their harbor. There’s excitement in the air as the hunt begins for the freshest catch of the season.

It’s a familiar scene to many of us in South Louisiana, where fishing culture is revered and passed down from generation to generation. But this is actually happening right now in the Copper River region of Southeast Alaska during the first weeks of salmon season.

Just as the Gulf of Mexico produces the best shrimp and redfish around, the Copper River provides some of the most flavorful and nutritious salmon in the world.

Robért Fresh Market began offering in-house filleted, fresh Copper River Coho Salmon May 20, making it the first South Louisiana grocer to do so in 2016.

Sustainably harvested according to strict guidelines set by the State of Alaska, Copper River wild salmon is high in protein and naturally rich in heart-healthy omega 3 fatty acids. The fish return to the region’s delta each year from May to September, making the long journey up steep, icy, glacial-fed waters.
